In December I went to Korea to work as Director of Photography on Matte Chi's 2nd-year film 애층 ("EhJeung"). The film recently screened at the 2011 Palm Springs International ShortFest in California, and it won two awards: the Alexis Award for Best Emerging Student Filmmaker for Matte, and the Kodak Award for Best Student Cinematography for my work on the film.

Here is a short teaser Matte made that shows some of what we shot. This was the first festival screening for EhJeung and I'm sure there will be many more to follow.

It's what everyone said to me on the street in Phuket, Thailand. Wherever I was going they wanted to take me there in their taxi or on their motorbike. Unfortunately for them I was usually just walking to the coffee shop on the corner. I eschewed the beaches (mostly) and stayed within Old Town Phuket; several historic blocks lined with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, five-foot walkways and tiny sidewalks. The shophouses had pastel louvred windows, Neoclassical columns, and fancy moulding like sweet cake frosting. My room at the guest house had an arched balcony with golden columns, a table and pink plastic chairs where I sat and wrote and watched the monsoon rains. (And I admit I did go to the beach — twice; and I've included the requisite pictures.)
